Type-C or Lightning earphones: which one fits your phone?

17 October 2026 4 min readBy Buykko

The 3.5mm headphone jack has quietly disappeared from most phones sold in India. If you still want wired earphones, and there are good reasons to, they now plug into the charging port. That port is one of two shapes, and ordering the wrong one is the most common reason wired earphones come back.

The good news is that working out which one you need takes about ten seconds.

The quick answer

  • iPhone 15 and newer (15, 16, 16e, 17, Air): Type-C.
  • iPhone 14 and older, back to the iPhone 5, including the iPhone SE: Lightning.
  • Almost every Android phone from the last several years (Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Redmi, Realme, Vivo, Oppo, Motorola, Pixel): Type-C.
  • Recent iPads, Android tablets and most new laptops: Type-C.

How to check in ten seconds

Look at the charging port. Type-C is an oval, symmetrical slot, slightly rounded at both ends. Lightning is narrower and flatter, and only Apple used it.

Still unsure? Check the cable that came with the phone. Whatever plugs into your phone to charge it is the connector your earphones need.

Why people are going back to wired

Wireless earbuds are convenient, but wired earphones still win in a few places that matter day to day.

  • No battery to charge, so they never die halfway through a call or a commute.
  • No lag. Sound stays in sync with video and games, which Bluetooth often does not manage.
  • No pairing. Plug in and they work, every time.
  • Far cheaper for the same sound, and far harder to lose one bud on the metro.

What else to look for

A built-in microphone and an in-line remote are worth having. They let you take calls, record voice notes and pause music without touching the phone. Check the driver size too: larger drivers, around 10mm and up, generally give fuller bass than the tiny drivers in very cheap pairs.

With Type-C earphones, a small converter chip turns the phone's digital signal into sound. Most models carry it in the plug, which is why they work across brands. If a pair stays silent on one phone, check that the phone's software is up to date before assuming the earphones are faulty.

One pair, both phones?

Households with an older iPhone and a newer Android often ask this. A single pair cannot do both natively, because the plugs are different. Pick the connector for the phone you use most, or keep one of each. Earphones are usually sold in both versions at the same price, so it costs nothing extra to choose the right one.
