Seven small kitchen fixes under ₹1,000 that you notice every day
The upgrades that change how a kitchen feels are rarely the expensive ones. These are the small fixes that remove a daily irritation rather than adding a feature you use twice a year.
1. Get the sponge out of the sink
A sponge left sitting in a wet basin stays wet, and a wet sponge starts to smell within days. A clamp-on faucet rack holds it above the water with an open base so it drains and dries. It fits most round tap pipes without tools.
2. A rotating spice rack rather than a drawer
Spices stored flat in a drawer mean lifting six to find the seventh. Anything that presents them upright and turnable saves a few seconds several times a day, which is the kind of saving you actually feel.
3. Under-shelf lighting
Most Indian kitchens are lit from a single ceiling point, so you work in your own shadow at the counter. A rechargeable strip or motion-sensor light under the wall units fixes that for very little money.
4. One good pair of kitchen scissors
Not for opening packets — for herbs, chillies, chicken and anything you would otherwise dirty a board for. Keep them separate from stationery scissors and they stay sharp.
5. Airtight containers that actually seal
In humid coastal weather, biscuits, papad and flour go soft quickly. A clip-lock lid with a silicone gasket is the difference between a container and a box with a lid on it.
6. A dedicated bin for wet waste
Separating wet and dry at the point of cooking, rather than sorting later, is the only version of this that survives contact with a busy week.
7. A step stool you can leave out
The top shelf stays unused because reaching it is a project. A slim folding stool that lives beside the fridge turns that shelf back into storage.
